A Treowen Stars Legend Calls Time – Tommy James Announces Retirement

Everyone at Treowen Stars AFC would like to pay tribute to one of the club’s best, as Tommy James has officially announced his retirement from football after an incredible 13 years of service to the club. Tommy has made the decision to step away from football due to commitments outside of the game

after spells with Cwmbran Celtic, Abertillery Bluebirds and Goytre, Tommy first signed for the club in March 2013 and from that moment established himself as a player who would become synonymous with everything Treowen Stars stands for.

A fierce and uncompromising defender, Tommy represented the club with unwavering commitment, unmatched consistency and a level of dedication that set the standard for everyone around him. Across more than a decade in a Treowen shirt, one thing was guaranteed — Tommy James would give absolutely everything for the Club.

His impact on the football club has been immeasurable.

Among many unforgettable moments throughout his career, one of the most iconic came during the 2024/25 title winning campaign, when Tommy scored the goal against Abercarn that sealed the league title, a moment forever etched into Treowen Stars history.

In fitting fashion, Tommy’s final appearance for the club came in one of the biggest occasions in our recent history, captaining the side in the 2026 Welsh Blood Service League Cup Final against Airbus UK Broughton, capping off another outstanding season where he once again proved himself to be one of the club’s standout performers.

But Tommy’s legacy extends far beyond what happened on the pitch.

He was the player every manager dreams of having. A leader in every sense and A player who never missed training, rarely suffered injury and consistently put the football club before himself. His professionalism, reliability and desire to win made him one of the most respected figures to ever represent Treowen Stars.

Off the pitch, Tommy has been just as influential. a huge personality within the dressing room and a central figure in building the culture and standards that continue to drive the club forward today.

First Team Manager Ben Murphy paid tribute:

“In my two years with the club, Tommy has been an absolute pleasure to manage. You knew exactly what you would get from him every time he stepped out onto the pitch, Treowen Stars always came first.

His commitment and dedication to the club is an inspiration to everybody and whilst I’m gutted he’s decided to retire, I am also very proud and grateful to have been able to work with someone who will do absolutely anything to earn three points on a Saturday.

A true club legend.”

Tommy James leaves behind a legacy that few players ever achieve, in particular in the modern era of football. Thirteen years of commitment, Countless memories, Historic moments and complete dedication to the club.

Whilst his playing days may now be over, his place in Treowen Stars history is secured. The club will be formally commemorating Tommy’s incredible service at an upcoming home fixture, where supporters will have the opportunity to show their appreciation for a player who has given so much to the club over the years.
