We are back on the road this weekend as we travel to the LHP Stadium to face a Carmarthen Town side who have made a perfect start to the new Novira Cymru South campaign. The Game represents another big early-season test for us, with Carmarthen taking maximum points from their opening three fixtures. We make the trip in good spirits ourselves after responding to our opening day defeat against Pontypridd United with back to back victories over Aberystwyth Town and Caerphilly Athletic.
A strong response
Our season began with a narrow 3–2 defeat at Bush Park against much fancied Pontypridd United, despite a positive performance and two goals from Tom Hillman.
We responded in the perfect way a week later with an excellent 2–1 victory away at Aberystwyth Town, before making it successive wins with a 3–0 victory over Caerphilly Athletic at Bush Park last weekend.
That result also brought our first clean sheet of the campaign and means we head to Carmarthen having collected six points from our opening three matches.
After a difficult start to last season at this level, taking six points from our first nine available this time around represents an encouraging start, but Saturday will provide another indication of where we are against a Carmarthen side who have been one of the early pace-setters and look strong contenders for a title push.
Three wins from three for the Old Gold
Carmarthen could not have asked for a better beginning under new manager Rhodri Thomas. Thomas stepped up following the departure of long serving manager Mark Aizlewood during the summer and has overseen three consecutive league victories.
Their campaign began with a remarkable 4–3 home victory over Caerau Ely. Reduced to ten men before half-time, Carmarthen produced an impressive response after the break and raced into a 3–0 lead. Caerau fought back to level the game at 3–3, but Lewis Reed struck in stoppage time to secure all three points.
A week later, the Old Gold travelled to Newport City and came away with a 2–1 victory. in a tight Carmarthen were clinical when opportunities presented themselves and recorded a very good away victory
last week they then made it three wins from three with a 3–1 victory over Afan Lido at the LHP Stadium last Friday. After going into half time level at 1–1, they produced a strong second-half performance to take control of the game and pick up another 3 points.
Last seasons meeetings
There was very little to separate the clubs for much of last season.
Our first meeting at the LHP Stadium finished 1–1, with Carmarthen finding a second-half equaliser after we had taken an early lead.
We then finished our league campaign with arguably one of our better performances of the season, beating Carmarthen 4–1 at Bush Park.
Corey Jenkins opened the scoring that afternoon before Tom Gameson and Christian Davies extended our advantage, with Lewis Green completing the scoring in stoppage time.
Those results will count for little once Saturday’s game begins, particularly given the changes both clubs have made over the summer, but they underline our ability to compete against an established side at this level.
Carmarthen’s perfect record means we know exactly how difficult Saturday’s fixture will be But we travel west with confidence of our own.
Back-to-back victories have given us momentum and last weekend’s clean sheet was another positive step forward as we continue to develop during the early weeks of the season. the game has all the ingredients for an entertaining afternoon at the LHP Stadium.
