Superb Second Half Showing Seals 4-2 Win at Carmarthen

A devastating second half display saw us come from behind to end Carmarthen Town’s perfect start to the season with an excellent 4-2 victory at the LHP Stadium.

Goals from Morgan Evans and Jaidan Foxwell, followed by a late Lloyd Oliver double turned the game completely on its head after we had gone into the break trailing 1-0.

Carmarthen had opportunities to extend their lead early in the second half but once we found the equaliser on 65 minutes there was no looking back, as our pace and quality on the counter attack proved too much for the hosts.

First Half

We almost made the perfect start inside the opening minute. carter campbells clever flick on found Harvey Selway who drove into the box and crossed for Morgan Evans who found himself with a great opportunity to open the scoring but his effort went narrowly wide of the post.

The opening 20 minutes were evenly contested, with both sides largely cancelling each other out. Carmarthen looked dangerous when they were able to attack, while we enjoyed plenty of possession and looked comfortable on the ball.

The breakthrough arrived for the hosts on 18 minutes and it was a disappointing goal to concede. A long throw into our penalty area caused problems and Tyler Aylward was able to capitalise to put Carmarthen 1-0 ahead.

We responded well to falling behind and began to take greater control of possession as the half progressed.

There were opportunities to get ourselves level, but we were unable to make our good spells count, while Carmarthen continued to provide a threat from set pieces, particularly through their long throw of Rhys Jenkins.

Despite trailing at the interval, there had been very little between the sides and we went into the dressing room disappointed not to be on level terms.

Second Half

The second half initially followed a similar pattern. We had an early opportunity when Carmarthen’s goalkeeper spilled a Tom Gameson effort. Carter Campbell looked to capitalise on the loose ball but the goalkeeper recovered quickly and smothered the danger before he could get his shot away.

Then came what would prove to be the defining period of the afternoon. A mistake in our back line presented Lewis Reed with a huge opportunity to double Carmarthen’s advantage, but he failed to convert. Moments later Reed was presented with another massive chance to make it 2-0 but he could not take it and they were made to pay.

Within a minute of Carmarthen passing up their second opportunity, Lloyd Oliver did brilliantly to help launch us forward on the counter-attack. The move ended n a frantic goalmouth scramble inside the Carmarthen penalty area. Three efforts were kept out before Morgan Evans finally forced the ball home at the fourth attempt to make it 1-1 on 65 minutes.

From that point, we took control. Our midfield three were dominating the contest and the pace of Evans and Oliver in attacking areas caused Carmarthen all sorts of problems. Attack after attack followed as we pushed the hosts deeper and deeper.

Eight minutes after equalising, we completed the turnaround. Tom Gameson produced a brilliant piece of play in the build-up before finding Jaidan Foxwell, who calmly rounded the keeper and finished. getting his first stars goal and putting us 2-1 ahead on 73 minutes.

The momentum was now completely with us. Carmarthen struggled to cope with the speed of our attacking duo and every time possession changed hands we looked capable of creating another opportunity.

With nine minutes remaining, another superb counter-attack gave us the breathing room our performance deserved. Morgan Evans delivered an excellent ball into the area and debutant Lloyd Oliver was there to finish the move and make it 3-1.

we weren’t finished. Five minutes later, Foxwell turned provider with an excellent pass that released Oliver out wide. His pace caused problem again and he made no mistake, grabbing his second of the afternoon and our fourth to complete an incredible 21-minute spell.

From 1-0 down on 64 minutes, we had raced into a 4-1 lead by the 86th.

Carmarthen pulled one back almost immediately through Harry Jones in the 87th minute, but it was little more than a consolation as we saw out the remaining minutes to secure an excellent three points.

The result was made even more impressive by the players unavailable for the trip west. We went into the game missing six players, including three regular centre-halves, leaving us with only one recognised centre-back available. Despite those absences, the players produced a performance full of character and showed the depth of the squad this season.

A mention must also go to referee Christopher Ball, who handled the game extremely well. In a competitive contest, he allowed the game to flow and did not need to show a single card throughout the afternoon.

After Carmarthen had won all three of their opening league fixtures, travelling to the LHP Stadium and coming from behind to score four second-half goals represents another significant step forward for us. It is now three consecutive victories following our opening-day defeat, as an encouraging start to the new Novira Cymru South season continues.
